BACK AT IT!

This last weekend’s Boardroom Show reflected what was and what should be! The upbeat crowd filled the aisles early Saturday morning as exhibitors stood in their booths filled with the latest designs and technologies for furthering enjoyment of the wave riding experience.

Minutes before the show opened, I wondered how it would turnout. We were ready, with 12 spectacular Bing Surfboards on display and racks ready for surfers to examine the board of their choice. Bing himself was there, ready to sign our Bing book for anyone who cared to pick it up and have it autographed, and we had a pleasant silent confident feeling that it was going to be good.

The sounds of planers mowing foam fired up and we were off. Within an hour we were swamped, burning through Bing books so fast our initial projection of book sales for both days would be passed by noon. Friends like Jock Sutherland, Peter Schroff, Jamie and Kate Sterling, Steve Pezman, Randy Rarick were stopping to see Bing and Matt. Hawaiian dealer, Dennis Kirk from Surfboards Factory Hawaii on Oahu was checking out the new Izzy Rider 2, Levitator 2 and Pintail Lightweight 2 along with the new Slalom… It was really fun to see everyone in good spirits, laughing, talking story and exchanging high fives like the old days.

I really enjoyed manning the Bing Surfboards booth at the Boardroom Surf Show this year. I signed dozens of Bing books and got to catch up with many old friends, plus make some new ones. There was a large crowd and everyone seemed to be having a great time! I didn’t get to walk around much because I had a hard time getting away from our booth. It’s great to see so many people still excited about surfboard building and the culture surrounding the sport. Everyone I talked to said the Icons of Foam shaping contest was great, all the shapers were very talented, and the judging by Roger Hinds, Timmy Patterson, and Pat Rawson was very fair. I truly enjoyed myself and I’m looking forward to coming down again next year to see everyone again!

An Interview with Christian Marcher of Progressive Surf Academy

You’d be hard pressed to find someone more stoked on surfing than our friend and local ripper Christian Marcher. Big boards, small boards, soft tops, surf mats, hand planes, you name it and this guy rides them all at a very elite level. The best part about Christian is that he is always the nicest guy in the water and he pushes the boundaries of what you think is possible on a surfboard every time he paddles out.

With over 30 years of surfing experience, Christian has built Progressive Surf Academy into one of the most well-respected surf schools anywhere on the West Coast. He and his team use a very unique approach that dives deep into ocean safety, technique, and ethics in the lineup that you don’t see anywhere else. Christian delivers a premium surf experience for all ages and has been a part of the Bing family for a few years, so we sat down to chat and learn a bit more about the man and his love for the ocean.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER, VIDEOGRAPHER AND LIFE ENTHUSIAST, TOM TERRELL

  • I started out shooting film photography in high school, and carried around a variety of 35mm cameras for a lot of years while touring as a musician. I despised digital cameras when they arrived, but eventually I met a fellow in Scotland who sold me a water housing and a Canon 60d and I discovered how much fun, and fruitful, swimming and shooting with a digital camera could be. About 2016 I started playing around with short surf films and realized really quick that I loved the medium. At the time I was a musician by trade so being able to combine rhythm, color, imagery and composition was a dream.
