I was born in Puerto Vallarta and raised in Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico. I am looking to move to Sayulita later this year when the time is right.
My dad, David Cunnison, is the reason I surf the way I do today. When I was 5 years old my dad took me to my first surf lesson with his friend Kahuna Bob at Beacons beach in Leucadia, CA.
I typically ride traditional single fin logs, but every once in a while I will ride shortboards if the waves call for it. I plan on traveling more in the future, so hopefully I will get to ride a wider range of boards around the world.
My favorite Mexican surfers are definitely Israel Preciado, Diego Cadena and Kalle Carranza. My favorite international surfers are Erin Ashley (aka Worm), Harrison Roach and Michael February.
My favorite spots in Mexico are Punta Burros (Punta de Mita), Shipwrecks (East cape) and El Anclote which is call “Mexican Malibu” when its working (Punta de Mita). My favorite spots in California are Swamis, Malibu, and Beacons.
The surf culture in Mexico has been growing at a slow pace for the last 20 years, but I’ve noticed a big push in longboarding that has been catapulted to the next level thanks to the Mexilogfest created by Bing team rider Israel Preciado. Every time I go surfing I see dozens of people learning how to surf. With warm water and many types of waves in Mexico it seems to be a popular destination for traveling surfers.
It’s actually very rare when I don’t surf, but for the most part I love building surfboards. I regularly like to train Muay Thai and also love to go camping, but that usually involves surfing almost every time.
My two main accomplishments with surfing both happened this year actually! I am the first Mexican surfer to make the semifinals at the Mexilogfest with an equal 5th place finish and I now have the opportunity to ride for Bing Surfboards which is easily one of the top surfboard brands in the world. This year has opened many doors for me and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to showcase my skills on the international level.
I would eventually like to be considered as one of the best longboarders in the world while representing my beautiful country of Mexico.
I hope to gain more experience and skill while riding high quality boards of all sizes. I would love to get more exposure internationally and have the chance to represent Bing when traveling the world as well. Lastly, I’m very excited to be learning as much as I can from master shaper Matt Calvani on how to build surfboards and potentially not only be a team rider, but some day get the chance to be one of his board builders as the business continues to grow here in the U.S. and globally. After spending time in California with the Bing crew I feel like it’s a great fit and I’m excited to see what the future brings!
