Event: Coffee with Matt Calvani
Date: Saturday, Dec. 7th
Location: Bing Surf Shop in Encinitas

Last Saturday was an unusual rainy day for Encinitas. However, the hot coffee from the Pannikin and all the chatter about surfboards kept everyone warm and talkative. Matt Calvani is the owner and head shaper at Bing Surfboards and he was available to the public last Saturday to talk about anything surfboard related. He gave recommendations on types of boards to ride, wave conditions suited for each model, ideas on what would help a person ride better for their stage of development and he even got deep into rails, concaves, fins and tail designs.

Everyone on hand got a turn to speak with Matt one-on-one. You could tell the information was helpful as people started to order boards and some even purchased boards off the showroom floor. Lucky for them the right size model was on hand so they didn’t have to wait for one to be made at the Bing Factory just up the street. A Bing Collector 7’8″, a Bing Silver Spoon 9’8″ and a Trimulux 9’0″ where a few purchased that day by some happy new owners. The Australian Foil, Bing Elevator and Bing Levitator also got pulled from the racks quite a bit during the discussions.

If you missed the event don’t worry. The Bing Surf Shop will have more this month. You can always contact us through our contact page to get any questions answered. The Bing Surf Shop also has knowledgeable employees who can listen, explain and get you into the perfect surfboard.

THE DESTINATION IS THE DESTINATION
THE DESTINATION IS THE DESTINATION

Travel is all about getting somewhere else. The journey, comically titled “the destination,” by some real masochists, feels more to me like a practical joke then a zen-buddha lesson in being present; a blur of drinking $9 Chardonnay while trying to stream Lego Batman across the isle and entertain a baby with a series of 10 second activities (tray table, crackers, seatbelt, headphones!).

When and where did you start surfing? Describe your first surfboard.

I started surfing when I was about 15 in Virginia Beach, and my first board was an old funboard from WRV that was about 7’6” and had glass on thrusters and an insane airbrush.

EL CAMPEON
EL CAMPEON

August 22, 2023

At the beginning, it was just an idea, but at the same time, a challenge I had set for myself some time ago. Honestly, I saw it as complicated since it was my first time traveling alone to Europe, and I was curious and nervous because I was literally going to another country. The only thing that reassured me was being able to speak Spanish over there. But, of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of the entire BAPU beachware team who encouraged me and gave me the motivation not to doubt myself and make this a fulfilled goal, we organized various activities while presenting the short film "El Gordo" to raise funds for this trip.
