The Narwhal

August 18, 2015

Here at Bing Surfboards we never shy away from a custom order, in fact, custom orders make up a good chunk of what we do around here and we embrace them with open arms. Every once in a while a really unique order comes through the factory that is unlike any other. I remember seeing this particular order when it was first submitted and having to google what a narwhal was (I’ll save you the time … the narwhal, or narwhale, is a medium-sized toothed whale that possesses a large “tusk” from a protruding canine tooth. It lives year-round in the Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada, and Russia.). Well it’s seldom that we get to see where these special custom orders end up, but today in our email inbox we got the best letter from Meghan, the proud owner of The Narwhal. She said,

Wow!  I am so stoked!  My board is amazing!  I want to send a big thank you to everyone at Bing who helped make this board, you nailed it.  It is a beauty in every way.  The design and colors are perfect.  Took it out for it’s first sesh on Sunday and it was so fun.  The glide is amazing, I felt like I was flying paddling this baby.  We caught some really fun waves together even in some not great conditions.  I can tell I’m gonna have loads of fun with it.  I love this board. Thank you, thank you, thank you.  I wish I could give you all a big hug!

This makes our day. We are so stoked for you Meghan! We hope you have many years of wave riding on that majestic Narwhal.

What would you do if you were gifted an almost pristine 1970s Bing single fin? Would you keep it for yourself? Most probably would. Encinitas local Mario Ordoñez-Calderón saw it as an opportunity to give back to his community. Mario approached Bing Surfboards about raffling off the gorgeous 7’4” single fin to raise money for his local non-profit, Un Mar De Colores, and we gladly accepted. We’ll be holding 14 day raffle for this original Bing surfboard with a live drawing for the winner on July 17th. All proceeds will go to Un Mar De Colores.

Rest In Peace: Greg 'Da Bull' Noll
Rest In Peace: Greg 'Da Bull' Noll

June 29, 2021

We met in 1949 hanging on the rail of the Manhattan Beach pier watching Velzy and the older guys surfing planks and paddle boards on the waves below.  That was our introduction to  surfing, and the surfer life, that consumed us both for the next seventy plus years.  Even though we were competitors in the surfboard business we’ve always remained close friends and best buddies. Rest In Peace Greg, you’ll be missed. - Bing Copeland
