The “Icons of Foam” competition has been a staple feature of The Boardroom (originally the Sacred Craft) experience. There have been many great shapers and surfboards shaped right before the eyes of many fans and aspiring new generation shapers. It’s always great to see the masters at work at their craft.
Bing Surfboard’s own Matt Calvani is the defending champion from the last stop of The Boardroom Icons of Foam (see video below). Matt rose above a field of master shapers to win the Tribute to Terry Martin, Icons of Foam competition last October, 2013, in Orange County. This year at Del Mar the Icons of Foam gives homage to Ben Aipa and his revolutionary “Sting” surfboard in memory of Buttons. A total of 6 invited shapers will have 1.5 hrs to replicate the Ben Aipa “Sting” they will have on hand. No measuring, just the shapers eye will be used to replicate the board. Ben Aipa and his two sons Duke and Akila will judge the anonymous blanks to declare a winner.

When and where did you start surfing? Describe your first surfboard.
I started surfing when I was about 15 in Virginia Beach, and my first board was an old funboard from WRV that was about 7’6” and had glass on thrusters and an insane airbrush.
