With more froth than a dry cappuccino, Dean Petty is a surfer, coffee guy and part time home builder. Originally hailing from Maine, this talented slider has carved an eclectic notch for himself on the point rich eastern shores of Nova Scotia.
Though geographically freezing cold, Petty keeps it cooking. Keeping his fire fueled by roasting beans at Anchored Coffee in Dartmouth and chipping away at his slice of heaven; an ocean front compound with million dollar views.
This caffeine propelled log riding specialist spends more time than most on the nose, but is not one to discriminate. Holding down a super diverse quiver, he shreds everything and anything that floats with a classic style and an infectious energy that warms even the coldest line up.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m originally from Southern Maine, but moved to Nova Scotia 18 years ago. This is home now…. And I couldn’t be happier about it.
WHEN AND HOW DID YOU START SURFING?
I started surfing when I was in the 7th grade. Mowed a few lawns… sold some sticks wrapped in yarn on the side of the road and made enough money to buy a board and a suit. My first kit was a 6’2 Spectrum thruster with the chunkiest rails and epic blue glass-on fins and a purple-ish Aleeda wetsuit.…. I wish I hung onto that one! Then a few years later my brother and I got a little yellow VHS called Super Slide and I got fully engulfed in longboarding.

WHAT TYPE OF BOARDS DO YOU NORMALLY RIDE?
I seem to be riding more midlengths and fishes than Kenny Logs at the moment. I kind of go through phases. I'm definitely in a mid-length, twin fish, glider phase right now and I’m loving it. So much fun!
FAVORITE SURFERS WORLDWIDE?
All of the nice ones who actually have fun when they are surfing.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SURFING AND THE WAVES WHERE YOU LIVE?
Its cold and perfect and inconsistent and you have to work for it a bit, but hot damn is it ever good when its on! I love being able to go for a surf with just people I know in the water. The juice is definitely worth the squeeze!

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT SURF TRIP
A few close friends, my brother, a van full of groceries and head off down the baja with a south swell in the water. Camping/ catching fish / making yummy food and surfing waves with no one around. Or getting tubed all day long in indo on a boat trip. Also very down for that! Basically any trip with good company.
OUTSIDE OF SURFING HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?
I work my buns off, running 3 businesses, and build things. I currently spend pretty much all my free time working the barn I’m building on my property. I have become a bit obsessed with the project.

ANY TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2022?
Say "YES" to every trip I get invited on. I have some trips lined up on the west coast of Canada, plus Nicaragua and Mexico. But I also really want to get back to Australia. So Australia and Indo too. That sounds like a good year!
