Paying tribute to professional artist and art director Mike Salisbury, Brian gives us his version of an early ad first created by a very young Mike for Bing Surfboards. Eye catching to say the least, Bing Copeland never envisioned this young surfer and artist would reach the level of professionalism and success that he did.
Mike Salisbury went on to an extremely illustrious career as the first Art Director at Surfer Magazine, and later Playboy and then L.A. Times’ West Magazine. Some of Mike’s later clients and works include album covers for Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall”, George Harrison’s first solo album “George Harrison”, the set design for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” and multiple Gotcha Sportswear campaigns for Michael Tomson. In 1973, Salisbury was hired by publisher Jan Wenner to update Rolling Stone from a newspaper format into a magazine, which he successfully pulled off, turning Rolling Stone into a world-class design effort with great photographs and astounding illustrations.
… and Mike got his start with Bing and a universal message; “Looking for a good surfboard?”
